Best Crib Mattresses Buyer’s Guide

A Word of Caution about Memory Foam

In some minds, memory foam is the only cushion worth sleeping on. As adults that may be true but for children who have yet to attain the dexterity to move freely and regulate their surroundings, memory foam may not be the best choice.

The CPSC (Consumer Protection Safety Commission) strongly recommends a firm mattress for newborns.  As your baby learns to roll over on demand and raise up on his/her arms (about 6 months of age) then memory foam can become a possibility.

Certifications

Safety guidelines and certifications are mentioned several times in these descriptions.  Each has its own criteria and tests for specific hazards.  Products for children are regulated for flammability (how resistant they are to fire), presence of lead, and potential for exposure to toxic emissions.

It is wise to read the label carefully and look for information regarding CertiPUR (usually for foam), GREENGuard Gold (products other than foam) and Federal safety guidelines.

What Size is a Crib Mattress?

There are two sizes for a crib mattress. The first, called standard, is 52 x 28 and up to 6 inches thick.  Mattresses more than 6 inches thick are not recommended for children as they may cause suffocation if too soft.  The second size is a portable or mini crib mattress with a size that is 24 x 38 inches and 1 to 3 inches thick.

A playard (or playpen) can be used as a crib but the pads in these vary by manufacturer with some very specific design differences.

How to Elevate Crib Mattress?

The first reaction to this question was ‘Why would you want to?’ but after some research, it does appear that some parents feel that elevating a crib mattress on one end could help with acid reflux, chest congestion and earaches.  The first comment here is – check with your pediatrician first before elevating the mattress.  How safe this practice is depends greatly on the child’s age and physical dexterity.

Let the doctor make the recommendation and avoid safe sleep aids that are based more on fear than science.  Second, look for other alternatives.  A newborn can sleep comfortably in a carrier or be given a tincture of ginger or chamomile tea that can quickly calm stomach distress.  Finally, if elevating a mattress has been recommended follow these suggestions.

  1. Avoid using memory foam sleep wedges, blankets or pillows on the top side of the mattress.  These can increase the risk of SIDS.
  2. Target no more than a 30% incline.  For a standard crib that is only about 6 inches of support.
  3. Follow these directions provided by LIVESTRONG.com  (https://www.livestrong.com/article/496494-how-to-elevate-crib-for-reflux/)

One last reminder. All babies go through periods of crankiness for multiple reasons.  Parents do become desperate to find any solution that works.  The truth is that babies (and parents) have survived for thousands of years and they will continue to do so.  Before embarking on a major change for what might be a temporary condition, consider safety as the number one goal.

How long Does a Crib Mattress Last?

The lifespan of a crib mattress depends on several factors. Warranties of items on this list vary from 1 to 6 years and that in itself is a reasonable time period for a mattress of this kind.  Whether the mattress lasts that 6 years or not will depend greatly on the purchaser.  Here are a few considerations that impact longevity of a crib mattress

  1. Keep it Clean – This is a mattress for a baby and there will be accidents. Change the sheets regularly. Wipe off the surface each time and regularly wash the cover if it comes with one.  Contamination is probably the most likely reason for needed a new mattress and regular cleaning will combat that problem and keep the little one safer.
  2. Choose Waterproof – While waterproof mattresses have their problems, a mattress that is waterproof will almost always outlast one that is merely water resistant.  Foam mattresses can easily be ruined by a leaky diaper or spilled bottle.  If the mattress you purchase does not come with a waterproof cover, purchasing such a cover may be a wise choice
  3. Storage – If little Johnny is transitioning into a new bed and the next baby is a few years away, the mattress will need to be stored.  Care should be taken to wrap the mattress in protective material and place it so that it is not under heavier items that may permanently damage cover or foam itself.  The area should also be dry to avoid moisture damage.

If you take these factors into consideration. Any mattress purchased will last a good long time.

Expert Tip

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (cpsc.gov), a crib mattresses should be firm, tight-fitting (no spaces between the mattress and crib railings) and covered by a fitted sheet specifically made for that size of mattress.  Use of pillows and heavy blankets is not recommended.

Did you know?

As they are known today, baby cribs or infant beds have only been in use since the 19th century ( 150-200 years). Typically not used until children outgrew the traditional cradle, cribs were used as much to contain a toddler as to provide a place to sleep.
