While many may think they understand the term ‘futon’ and what it means to others, it might be a far more diverse concept than imagined.  In traditional Japanese culture, the word refers to a simple bedroll that was placed on the floor, aired out every morning and stored throughout the day. With global availability of cotton beginning in the 19th century, futons became quite popular but changed little in design until a creative woodworker changed that concept in the early 1980s.

Now known as the Western futon or futon couch, this marriage of the thin mattress and movable sofa frame became unbelievably popular as a quick, inexpensive option when both seating and sleeping accommodations were needed. Those original futon mattresses where often filled with cotton like their Japanese cousins and not at all comfortable for sleeping.

Today, both traditional Japanese style futons and Western style futon sofa mattresses are available through online retailers.  This list has some of the best selections for futon mattresses on the market today.

Best Futon Mattresses Buyer’s Guide

Frame or NO Frame – That is the Question

The truth is that not all futon mattresses require a frame.  If the purpose of this purchase is to provide a place to sleep for weary friends or relatives, a simple Japanese style futon may be the best bet.  Storage is simple and cost can be less than $100. If, however, seating and a place to crash are needed, then the futon sofa is likely a better choice.

Styles vary greatly and fit most decors.  The cost can be marginal or quite expensive.  There are plenty of options available and a futon sofa is generally easier to move and store if living arrangements are in flux.

Frequency of Use

How often this piece of furniture will be used can heavily impact choice in this matter. While most people are ok with sleeping on a cotton filled traditional futon mattress for a night or two, sleeping on it every night may not be an ideal situation.

At the same time, investing major bucks into a mattress that is only used during the holidays may not be in the budget. Comfort also refers to seating as well as sleeping comfort.  How often it will be used is probably a larger factor than its style or cover color.

Shipping – More than 2-day Shipping

Many of the products here are imported.  Standard 2-day shipping is not often available for such products. Please consider lengthy shipping times when ordering.

What Size is a Futon Mattress?

Futon mattresses come in the same sizes as standard bed mattresses but also specialty sizes to fit odd size platforms and frames. This list is the most common sizes of futon style pads.

Mattress size dimensions:

  • Chair: 28″ x 54″
  • Chair Ottoman: 28″ x 21″
  • Twin: 39″ x 75″
  • Twin XL: 39″ x 80″
  • Loveseat: 54″ x 54″
  • Loveseat Ottoman: 54″ x 21″
  • Full: 54″ x 75″
  • Queen: 60″ x 80″

How to Clean a Futon Mattress?

This has become a difficult question to answer based on the industry recommendations – particularly for the items listed here.  Most of the time, the recommendation is to not wash or dry clean, and to just spot clean.  Companies recommend purchasing an additional protective cover which can then be washed.  That said, there will be times when spot cleaning will just not do the job. Here are some suggestions – but remember to defer to the manufacturer’s recommendations during any warranty period.

  1. Rotate and flip the mattress regularly to even out wear.
  2. Air out and place in the sun if possible. Sunlight is a natural disinfectant.
  3. Vacuum (on both sides) regularly to get dry particles such as dust, dirt, pet hair, and dried ‘what-not’ from taking up permanent residence in the mattress
  4. Clean with a steam cleaner perhaps once a year – once every six months if heavily used. JUST REMEMBER: See that the mattress is completely dry (not just to the touch) before using.  This is not a job for a cool, rainy day as the potential for mildew growth increases, Fans, heat and sunlight can help dry out a mattress in an hour or so.

How to keep futon Mattress from Sliding?

Some futon frames come with guards that keep the mattress in place. If that is not the case, there are products that are non-slip pads that are available to keep mattresses from sliding off when in use.  These products can come in rolls and be cut to fit or can be cover the entire back of the mattress.

Expert Tip

While some futon sofas have a simple, sliding design that gently allows the back to slide into place, other types have metal levers, pins and cogs that can become warped by heavy wear. In the end, the general rule is that futons are easier to get down than put back up, particular as they age.  Watch those fingers putting a stubborn futon back in an upright position.

Did you know?

The traditional futon, stuffed with cotton, was quite rare prior to industrialized production of cotton in the 18th century.  Futons were so valuable that they were used as gifts to seduce women and the number of futons owned indicated the woman’s popularity.
