Today, these inventions in comfort offer many different options from multiple heat settings to an automatic shut off feature.

They can be simple pads with dial controls or luxuriously quilted creations that fit the mattress like a new skin.  The choices seem endless and the benefits many. As a way to stay comfortably warm on a cold night, the heated mattress pad has to be one of the best ways to enjoy a good night’s rest as the temperature dips.  This list offers some of the best options available to the consumer.

Best Heated Mattress Pads Buyer’s Guide

Purchasing a heated mattress pad should be a relatively easy task, but there are some factors that should be considered before making that purchase.

Bed Sizes and Pads

In a perfect world, your mattress pad should fit your mattress perfectly.  This means no wrinkles across the top or extra padding that need to be folded under the mattress.  Sizing does matter.

There are six standard sizes and a few specialty ones. Standard sizes include Twin (or Bunk Bed), TwinXL (sometimes used in dorm rooms), Full, Queen, King and California King.  Specialty sizes include Cot, Youth, Crib and Three Quarter bed.  It is important to purchase the size that matches your mattress size even if another size is cheaper or on sale.

UL Rating (Underwriters Laboratories)

The UL rating and symbol indicates that the product has been testing and proven safe for general use.  UL, in its 100 years history, has become the global leader for testing and certification of products. Its trademark of the letters UL inside a circle has been a sign of quality for decades.  Underwriters Laboratories is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to public safety.

TLC (Tender Logical Care) for Heated Mattress Pads

LIke all electrical devices, the product only works as long as the wiring is in good condition.  Heated mattress pads work because the small insulated wires within its cover give off heat.  However, if these wires are broken then the electrical circuit is damaged and the pad does not heat as well as it should. Much like a set of Christmas tree lights, it only takes one small break to ruin the whole pad.

These wires have been tested for normal use conditions.  Any other activity such as standing or jumping on the bed has the potential for the wires in that one spot to break. While using the heated pad, it is wise to exercise caution in the same way you would any other electrical appliance.

Power and Controller Cords

Mattress pads are usually listed as machine washable and dryer safe.  But there is one condition of those statements.  While the fabric pad and the encased wires are washable, the power cord and controllers should never be attached when the item is washed. Always, disconnect from the power source first and then disconnect the power and controller cords from the mattress pad before washing.

Should the cords need to be cleaned, do so with a damp cloth. Never submerge the controllers as even a small amount of moisture can damage the components.  The pad should be completely dry before reattaching the power and controller cords.

Electric Shock

Each of these products has been safety tested and certified.  However, if the user experiences an electrical shock from the product, disconnect the pad from its power outlet and do not use again.  Contact customer service for information about the warranty or troubleshooting the problem.

Water and Moisture

Water and electricity do not generally mix.  From the occasional spill of a drink while watching a favorite movie in bed to living in a humid climate, moisture does need to be avoided to get the best performance from any heated bedding product and avoid turning it on if it gets damp.

Although these products have been tested for safety, they still are not recommended for use when damp or in the presence of water.  Always see that the pad is dry before plugging in cords. Keep spills away from the connections and away from the controllers as they can short out if exposed to water.

In order to get the most out of this purchase,

Use with Children

There is much discussion about using heated bedding of any kind with children  Children do not always have the same ability to regular body temperature that adults do. For this reason, most experts do not recommend the use of heated bedding until a child is much older.

Fabric Differences

Even if a top-quality sheet covers the new mattress pad, there will be wear and tear on the pad.  This list has pads which are made from non-woven fiber fabrics to 250 thread count 100% cotton.  While the initial impression might be “So What?”, in the longrun, what the pad is made of makes a difference as to how long it will last.  Non-woven fabrics can tear in the same way heavy paper can tear when stressed  Lightweight polyester fabric can pill when rubbed over an extended period of time.

Pilling means that small fiber balls form and cling to the surface of the fabric. These ‘pills’ can be felt through sheets and interrupt sleep. Cotton pads can shrink if washed and dried on high heat settings.  Each fabric type has it benefits and problems and should be considered for its overall qualities before purchasing a pad.

How to wash a Heated Mattress Pad?

Follow instructions in the product information.  If that is not available then follow these guidelines:

  1. Unplug from the wall outlet
  2. Remove power cord and controller cords and store
  3. Soak in a prewash cycle for 15 minutes if the pad is heavily soild
  4. Wash on the ‘gentle’ or ‘delicate’ cycle (cold or warm water and light soap) according to machine directions
  5. Allow to air dry for several hours or place in the dryer on low heat and tumble dry.

*** Make sure the pad is completely dry before connecting the power and connector cords.

Are the Controls at Foot or Head of the Bed?

Generally, the controls are placed at the foot of the bed.  The area where they connect can be uncomfortable to sleep on for some.  However, if you are wanting controls placed so that the are easy to reach from a nightstand then the mattress pad need only be turned around so that the connection is at the top of the bed.  Understand that this might require a longer power cord but the pad will work in either position

How long is the Cord?

Information about cord length is not always published in online sales information.  A good rule of thumb is to expect the plug in cord to be a minimum of 5-6 ft long.  Some models may have cords that are longer.  Remember it is not a good idea to use an extension cord with any type of heated bedding product because of the amount of electricity it can pull. Extension cords can easily overheat.

Can this Mattress Pad be used with a Timer on the Outlet?

No. The auto-off features makes it necessary to set the heat every time it is used. In the same way, the pad would not come back on when the power comes back on after a power outage.

Can this Pad be used on a Memory Foam Mattress?

According to manufacturer’s website, there is no reason why a heated mattress pad cannot be used on a memory foam mattress.  It will not damage the foam in any way.  That said, keep in mind that memory foam can have a softer feel that can increase the wear and tear on the cover.  Fabric may tear more easily and wires may become damaged over time.

Did you know?

In most cases, manufacturers of heated bedding products provide dual controllers for Queen and King size beds only.  Twin and Full sized products typically have one controller.
