Best Mattresses for Kids Buyer’s Guide

Buying a mattress for your child is a bit different than buying one for yourself. This is why there are mattresses that have been designed specifically for children. There are some criteria you need to take into consideration when buying a mattress for your child.

First and foremost, children weigh less than adults. And they move around more at night, wiggling from one sleep position to another. As well, children are often warmer at night when they’re sleeping. This means that it’s easy for them to feel over-heated and wake up, which disturbs their sleep.

Another factor to take into consideration is that many children have allergies and sensitivities. Buying a mattress that addresses all these issues means that you’re providing your child with the perfect way to get a great night of sleep. Let’s take a look at each of these issues in more detail.

Adequate Support

Children are lighter than adults and they need a mattress that responds to the shape and weight of their body. For children, it’s less about choosing a soft or firm mattress – it’s all about the support a mattress can give them as they sleep. Children should sleep with their neck and spine in a neutral position. This places less stress on their back as they grow.

A supportive mattress needs to be soft enough for their body to be comfortable and firm enough to keep them from sinking in too deep. But it can’t be too firm. If your child favors sleeping on their side, a firm mattress can be uncomfortable and put pressure on their shoulders and hips.

Size of Mattress

Once your child is out of the crib, you’re probably puzzled about what size mattress and bed you should move them to. The best advice is to buy one that they’ll be using for at least a few years – otherwise they’ll quickly outgrow a small mattress. And you don’t want to be buying a new mattress every couple of years. The general rule is that as your child gets older and grows, their mattress should grow with them.

When considering the size of the mattress, look for long-lasting quality. If you choose one that your child will have for a few years and grow into, you want to be sure that the quality of the mattress is going to hold up over those years.

Most kid’s bed frames will come in twin, twin xl, and full. A full mattress and bed may initially be more expensive for you to purchase, but it’s a great size for them to grow into. And if you buy one of good quality, it’s a mattress they can have well into their teens. There will be a difference in price depending on what size you choose.

Twin Size

Twin mattresses are typically 38 x 75 inches. They’re the least expensive and a good option if your child is sleeping in a smaller bed.

Twin XL Size

With the twin xl, you get a bit more length to the mattress, 38 x 88 inches. You’ll be able to use this mattress for a little longer than the twin mattress before you child outgrows it.

Full Size

At 54 x 75 inches, this size mattress is your best option if you have the room for it and if you don’t mind paying a bit more.

Type of Mattress

You have several different types of mattresses to choose from. Here are some of the important points you should know about each.

Innerspring Mattresses

Many parents choose a mattress known as an “innerspring” mattress. Look for mattresses that have a high spring count – the more springs there are the more support it provides. Also check on the coil gauge. You’ll want a lower coil gauge, which means the coils are thicker and the mattress will be firmer. These types of mattresses are very durable, which means that it can handle being jumped and romped on by playing children.

You can choose from a pocket coil or an open coil innerspring mattress. With the pocket coil each of the springs are wrapped and protected in fabric. The weight of your child is evenly distributed on the mattress, which puts less pressure on the springs.

The open coil costs less than the pocket coil. The springs in this mattress are open and not wrapped in fabric so they wear out quicker. As well, as your child gets heavier, the springs may add pressure when your child is sleeping and cause some discomfort.

Memory Foam

Mattresses that are foam-based are very comfortable, molding to the shape of your child’s body.  If you buy a memory foam, know that the foam releases gases. You’ll need to let it air out for a few days in a well-ventilated room so that the gases are released. If you buy a foam mattress be sure that it comes with certification indicating that the released gases are minimal.

Latex Foam

A natural foam latex mattress may cost a bit more than other mattress types, but it’s worth it.  One of the big advantages of latex mattresses is that they provide superior support for your growing child. This type of mattress is breathable and allows air flow, making it ideal for regulating your child’s body temperature when they’re sleeping.

Allergies and Asthma

If your child has allergies or asthma, besides regularly changing the bedsheets, a hypoallergenic mattress is a must. Synthetic mattresses are a good option. The fibers in these mattresses are less prone to the bacteria and tiny mites that aggravate allergies. Look for brands that are made with safe materials to make them antibacterial and hypoallergenic.

Conclusion

Before deciding what mattress to buy for your child, take the time to do your own research. Write out a list of what you’re looking for in a mattress. This should include what size is the right fit as well as whether you want a foam or coil mattress. Talk to other parents you know who have recently bought a mattress to see why they bought the one they did. And read the reviews! They give you a lot of information about a mattress.

Then if possible, head to the store with your child and give a few mattresses a test drive. How does it feel? Have your child lay down – does the mattress adequately support them? These are the questions you should be asking. One thing to always keep in mind before you buy is that you’ll be able to get better prices online.

We now use functional box springs and bed frames for our beds. But before bed frames, mattresses were supported on wooden frames and secured using rope and twine.
