Mattress Topper Buyer’s Guide

Third-party sellers

Recently, major news outlets have reported issues with third party sellers for online retailers. The partnerships that online retailers such as Amazon, Walmart, Wayfair, and Target have with these companies is an important part of why they are successful. Without these partnerships, they would simply not be able to carry the vast inventory they do.  However, purchasing from a third-party seller can be risky.  The old adage – BUYER BEWARE – does sometimes apply in these cases.  Before clicking on “Add to Cart”, read the description completely and check out the size and retailers name and location. If the information seems too good to be true, think before you buy.  At the same time, some of the best purchases you make can come from these small retailers. Do some research and get the best deal for the product you want.

Toppers vs. Pads

It may be difficult to distinguish one from another in today’s market but generally today’s toppers are thicker than what is called a mattress pad. The other major difference is what materials are used.  Toppers frequently refer to foam construction. Pads are often more fabric oriented with natural or hypoallergenic fibers in its construction.  A third difference is washability. Toppers, if made from foam, are not meant for machine washing. Mattress pads, although quite bulky, can be handled in a washer and dried safely.  As one considers what function the topper or pad will have, these slight difference can impact how well your purchase meets your needs.

Shipping and Returns

These products all come compressed and vacuum packed. While not as bulky as a mattress, this unique form does have some special considerations.  Companies often recommend opening within 72 hours of receipt to prevent damage to foam products.  Once opened the product will expand quickly. Opening the box near the bed might be a good move. The thicker the product the more time it will take to expand to its full depth.  Allow 2 to 3 days for the new product smell to dissipate.  Keep in mind this technology also presents some problems if you decide to return your product.  The genie does not go back into the box.  Returns may need to be arranged through the manufacturer and not the online retailer.

Securing a Mattress Topper

If you tend to toss and turn at night or roll over in one direction only, the mattress topper you have just purchased to offer comfort may become a slippery surface that needs to be repositioned every morning.  Thicker and heavier mattress toppers may not move as much but some form of stability may be needed.  Sheet suspenders or anchoring bands are available through many online retailers and can secure your topper or pad without damage to the mattress or pad.  Non-skid materials that resembles a rubber mat can also be purchased to keep the topper in place.  Some of the products on this list have those features incorporated into their product.

How to Choose a Mattress Topper?

To help choose the right mattress topper, ask yourself these questions.

  • Are you looking for protection for your mattress? A waterproof, washable mattress pad or cover is likely your best bet.
  • Are you looking for added comfort? – Memory foam toppers will provide softer feel and comfort than quilted mattress toppers.
  • Is your mattress in good shape or is it near its end? Toppers and pads are great for adding features to a quality mattress but if your mattress is on its last legs than it might be better to invest in a mattress.  Nowadays, foam mattresses are reasonably priced and can give comfort as well as support.

How to clean memory foam mattress topper?

In general, foam mattress toppers are NOT machine washable. Cleaning in general has its problems such as long drying time, where to clean and maneuvering the pad to avoid damaging it.  The best option is to prevent stains to reduce the need to clean the foam itself. Here are some suggestions.

  1. Buy a mattress pad or cover that can be washed regularly.
  2. Rotate and flip (if possible)  the topper often for even wear.
  3. Vacuum the pad (both sides) regularly – perhaps once a month to keep dried particles from getting embedded in the foam.
  4. Spot clean with a damp cloth using mild laundry soap.  Dry completely before using.
  5. Steam cleaning can be an option for heavy stains.  Follow directions on the machine and use mild soap. Use fans circulate air until the topper is completely dry.

How to Keep Mattress Topper from Sliding?

The short answer to this question is to just use a tight deep-pocket fitted sheet that should keep the topper in place. Unfortunately, that may not solve all the problems and some of the ideas on the internet lean toward the crazy.  Here are the best options that should not damage the topper or mattress and keep them both in place.

  1. No-skid pads – These rubber-like pads are designed to hold on to the foam through friction and keep it is place.  They are generally not permanent and can be removed at an time.
  2. Sheet suspenders or grippers – Designed to keep the sheet in place even for the most restless night, these come in several varieties and are generally successful.
  3. Velcro – Velcro comes in several wide sizes with industrial adhesive backings. Using these wide velcro strips in several places can keep the mattress pad in place.  This will work best for thinner pads.

Note: The thicker the pad the more difficult it will be to keep the pad in place if the user tends to move a great deal at night.

Expert Tip

Memory foam mattress toppers are NOT generally recommended for crib use or with individuals who are not able to successfully maneuver independently.  The soft conforming nature of memory foam makes it dangerous for persons who may find themselves asleep face down and unable to move.

Did you know?

Memory foam is heat sensitive. The warmer the environment the less supportive it is.  Using a memory foam topper with a heated mattress pad or blanket may cause the memory foam topper to feel thinner and to absorb some of the heat.
