You were taught a great deal about how to buy a good car but no one ever mentioned how to buy the best mattress.  What do you do?

It is true that mattresses are rarely the topic of conversation but just like any other purchase they have their good points and their bad ones.  This list has been compiled to help wade through that process of finding the best mattress for under $1000.

1. Sweetnight 10 Inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress

A surprisingly practical and unique way of addressing the softness of memory foam, the Sweetnight 10 inch foam mattress has the typical 3 layered construction of other mattress but with a solid solution to finding the feel a bit too soft.  In one quick sentence - turn the mattress over.  The ‘325’ design - 3” comfort foam, 2’ of gel foam, and 5” of deep support foam will general give a soft or plush feel unless you turn it over and then you have a medium and more supportive option.

The idea of turning a mattress over is not a new one. Turning a mattress to increase longevity has been a longtime practice with coil springs. But, memory foam is typically marketed as only useable on one side. This company has chosen to state straight up that a foam mattress can be turned over as long as it is understood that one side is firmer than the other. The soft rayon-cotton blend cover is hypoallergenic and resists moisture. It is also removable and washable. The manufacturer extends a 10 year limited warranty to all purchasers.

Mattresses Under $1000 Buyer’s Guide

Bed in a Box Shipping

The large majority of memory foam mattresses ship through compressed technology called ‘Bed-in-a-Box’.  Once manufactured, the mattress is compressed and rolled into a tight bundle and then boxed.  The larger the bed size and the deeper the mattress, the heavier the box will be.  It is a good idea to take the box to the bedroom and unpack there. As the box and wrapping is removed the new mattress will immediately begin to expand.  Manufacturers typically state that the mattress will take 2-3 days to expand fully.  Having help on hand may also be a good idea.

Returns

Ordering a mattress online is both convenient and affordable but there is one drawback and that is the possibility of a return.  The amazing technology that got your mattress delivered to your door in a box that was smaller than an artificial Christmas tree is not particularly user friendly if you do not like your purchase.  Some retailers require the merchandise be returned in the box and able to be shipped back. So this is just a word of advice. Once you have made your choice call the seller and the manufacturer and ask about the procedures for a return. Better to be knowledgeable than surprised later on.

Sheets and Linens – You May Need New Ones!

Not too many years ago, mattresses were a standard thickness of about 8 inches. Purchasing sheets and other bed linens was not a big deal and mattress thickness was not a concern. Today, that isn’t the case.  If you are buying a deeper mattress than you previously had, you will need to purchase what are called ‘deep pocket sheets’ for them.  Sheets are now available to accommodate a mattress thickness of 18 inches.  Read the description carefully if buying online and be sure to have your new sheets waiting at home when the mattress arrives.

How to choose a Mattress?

Purchasing a mattress with all the options available today can be overwhelming but Good Housekeeping has put together a list of tips that is clear and concise. With its long history as a leader in product safety, GH can help anyone make the best choice for their situation.  The best advice they offer is to “NOT RUSH” into a decision.  Sounds like good advice.

Do I need a box spring or foundation for my mattress?

The products that are on this list are ALL mattress only sales. Whether a foundation is needed or not can be a matter or personal preference. Those with adjustable and platform bed frames may not need a foundation.  Other more traditional beds will likely need some type of solid surface on which to place the mattress.  Ideally, the top of a mattress should be at least 18 to 20 inches off the floor (knee height).  If you have a 10 inch mattress and your bed frame is only 4 inches off the floor that leaves a 4 to 6 inch gap.  Old box springs can be used as a foundation or something called a “bunkie board” which is a 2 to 3 inch hard platform that is generally used on bunk beds. Foundations do not need to be fancy or expensive but they do provide more support for a memory foam mattress and make it easier to get out of bed in the morning.

How long does a Mattress last?

Mattresses tend to be used much longer than manufacturer recommendations. Prior to the popularity of foam, coil mattresses were commonly used for decades. But as technology and guidelines change so do the recommendations for how long a memory foam mattress can be used. In general a low-density comfort foam product may have a lifespan of 4-6 years if cared for according to manufacturer’s instructions.  Higher end hybrid or high density foam products may be able to last for as much as ten years.  Take a clue from the manufacturer’s warranty and use it as a guide for how long a foam mattress can perform well under normal circumstances.

What to do with old Mattress?

Note:  Check local government guidelines – they vary

Information on the internet about how to dispose of a mattress is often misleading. Several states have clear guidelines limiting what can be done with a used mattress and yes you can be in noncompliance for selling a used mattress if it is found to be a health risk. Purchasing a mattress from a local store has one clear benefit – they will likely take care of mattress disposal or repurposing. For those that purchase online, however, that option doesn’t exist.

Expert Tip

Protecting a new mattress can help keep its new shape and WEIGHT.  Like humans, mattresses may double in weight overtime from absorbing dust and other materials. Cover that mattress and it will be the easiest and healthiest diet for your new mattress.

Did you know?

Most of us have been taught to make our beds in the morning, but it is actually healthier to leave then unmade – at least for a period of time.  You see, dust mites love dark, warm, moist environments. Throwing the covers back for even a few minutes reduces the moisture and temperature of the bed so dust mites are less likely to feel welcome.
