Now you need to buy a mattress and just know that the recommendations of your friends and loved ones are not going to cut the mustard.  How will you choose a mattress that is comfortable for you, the larger than average model?  Do you trust the salesman  or go online and hope for the best? Why is finding the best mattress for a heavy person got to be so difficult?

Your plea has not gone unnoticed.  This list of best mattresses for heavy people will help you make the right choice for your situation. Good luck on your search.

1. Zinus Memory Foam Green Tea

The Green Tea Memory Foam mattress by Zinus is made of a proprietary BioFoam construction infused with Green Tea extract to insure freshness.  The product comes in 4 thicknesses (6, 8, 10, 12 inches).  Each has a layered system of memory foam, comfort foam and Airflow high-density foam. In the case of the 12-inch model, the mattress has an additional layer of Airflow high-density base support foam for additional support.

Often, how a mattress feels has a great deal to do with individual body structure. A mattress that is ‘too firm’ for a 100 pound teen may feel comfortable to a 250lb construction worker. The additional support in the 12 in depth provides larger than average people with the additional support and firmness. This foam is certified to have low emissions and resistant to mold, mildew and dust mites. It is available with a 10 year manufacturer’s warranty and comes in compressed form for easy shipping to home.

Mattresses for Heavy People Buyer’s Guide

Mattress Sizes

Industry standards dictate the size of each mattress type allowing for small variations in manufacturing. Those sizes are:

  • Twin Size – 39″ W x 75″ L
  • Twin XL Size – 39″ W x 80″ L
  • Full Size – 54″ W x 75″ L
  • Queen Size – 60″ W x 80″ L
  • King Size – 76″ W x 80″ L
  • California King Size – 72″ W x 84″ L

Larger mattresses do offer larger people more room but a bigger size will not automatically provide the user with better support and comfort.  A twin size hybrid mattress with at least 6 inch coils and supportive memory foam may offer a better sleep choice than a queen size 8 inch 100% memory foam mattress.  Research is the key.

Covers and their Differences

Sad but true, the mattress that is purchased may be absolutely awesome for feel and support but over time, an annoying thing happens – the cover begins to degrade.  Perhaps the polyester microfiber begins to ‘pill’ (i.e. develop small hard bits) that can be quite irritating to sleep on, or the non-woven material begins to split like over used construction paper, or the imprinted quilting begins to give way and shift. Whatever happens, before the mattress gets blamed consider the easy fix solution of simply buying a new mattress cover.  A rayon style cover (sometimes called bamboo or Tencel) will give you a lightweight, silky smooth solution to the problem.

Fire Barriers/ Flammability

This term is found in some descriptions and should not cause alarm. It actually addresses an old issue with foam – its flammability.  Some models include a fire barrier cover which is likely made from fiberglass. While fiberglass is an amazing product that in some ways replaced asbestos, it can develop fine splinters that can be difficult to remove.  Should your mattress have a zippered mattress cover with a fire barrier, BE CAREFUL the first time you remove it. Users also have the option of cleaning the cover while on the mattress with a small steam cleaner or vacuum.  Purchasing a separate cover that can be washed regularly is also a viable option.

Returns

A quick reminder that returning a compressed memory foam mattress has some challenges. Regardless of the nature of the company from which the mattress came, returning a compressed mattress is just not easy.  So here are some thoughts. 1) Avoid the impulse buy. 2) Do some research. 3) Understand there will be no store to drag it to if something goes wrong. With that in mind, purchasing online should go smoothly and be a great option.

What does Bed-in-a-Box mean?

Bed-in-a-Box is a unique and frankly amazing technique that rolls, compresses and vacuum packs foam mattresses so that they can be shipped through normal transportation methods. Without this technique, ordering a mattress online would simply be impossible. That said, customers do need to take care to only open the box when it is positioned on or near the bed. Imagine activating an automatic life raft in your home and you get the picture.  The mattress should be opened as soon after arrival as possible to prevent damage and it can take as much as 72 hours before the mattress is fully inflated. Online links are now available on most manufacturer’s websites and YouTube.com

What is a good mattress for heavy people?

There are five factors that should be considered when purchasing a mattress. These are the recommendations for those users over 230 pounds

  1. Thickness – The support part, be it coils, foam or whatever, needs to be at least 6 inches thick and ideally more than 50% of the overall thickness. Mattresses less than 10 inches thick are considered less than optimal for heavy people.
  2. Firmness –  Generally, a medium-firm rating is considered optimal
  3. Density -Ideal materials would be high-density foam with a rating of at least 1.8 per sq.ft. and coils mattresses with at least 15 coils per sq.ft.
  4. Durability/Longevity – Because of the additional weight, mattresses do not always last as long as with average sized sleepers. Latex tends to be rated better for longevity but all materials are within a few points of each other.
  5. Product Ratings – Most product ratings are for average people. Those who are outside of those demographics (smaller or larger) may find the recommendations to be inaccurate for their circumstances. Using the criteria above may lead to a better overall decision.

Which mattress is better for heavy people innerspring or memory foam?

The answer to this question could be a long debate.  On one hand innerspring mattresses typically have more support than memory foam. On the side of memory foam is its ability to conform to the body and relieve pressure points that might be left unsupported in a conventional innerspring mattress. Although only one made this list, looking into a hybrid mattress that combines the support of individual coils with one or more layers of memory foam could be the best way to get the comfortable softness of memory foam with the structural foundation of an innerspring that will adequately support the weight of the larger individual.
