So how does one find a good pillow based their sleep position. Sleep position does factor into the type of pillow that is best but there are many other factors as well. Larger side sleepers may need a firm pillow that is quite deep.

Stomach and back sleepers however may need a pillow that is only a few inches high. Several companies are now offering personalized comfort with construction that can be adjusted by the consumer. Not as common as side and back sleepers, stomach sleepers have not always had much to say about the trend toward softer and bigger pillows.  Now, it is time to address the need for a pillow by those who are choose to sleep face down.

Best Pillows for Stomach Sleepers Buyer’s Guide

Materials and Construction

While the most common material these days seems to be memory foam, there are multiple materials used for pillows that might need to be considered.  Here are some materials that you might not have heard of.

  1. Feathers – One of the original materials used in pillows, it has its good qualities and its bad. Feathers are all natural and produce a soft and warm pillow but degrade over time.  Even a high quality down (the smallest and lightest of feathers) will flatten over time. Support for neck and spine is lacking in a feather pillow.
  2. Latex – This naturally based product is mixed with other materials to create a rubbery compound or foam. It too degrades over time and causes a mess when it does. Latex foam.  Properties are much like memory foam.
  3. Polyester (Fiberfill) – Initially and excellent alternative to feather pillows, polyester fiberfill as the soft feel of feathers but the tendency to flatten, bunch or shift as it is used.  There was also a version of tiny polyester balls which was used to fill pillows. It was washable, could be filled to meet any desired loft feel but was a mess if the cover tears.
  4. Gel – A silicone or polyurethane material that is neither a liquid or solid, gel pillows are known for their ability to dissipate heat.  Because of their fluid nature, however, they do not always provide good support to neck and shoulders.

Type of Pillow

Besides the decorative type of pillow, there are three different types of pillows used during sleep.  They are:

  1. Contour – Shaped to fit the contours of the body in an effort to be more comfortable or supportive
  2. Classic – a general rectangular shape that has varying depths to it
  3. Specialty  – these pillows serve a particular need such as a body pillow that is used to support arms and legs in a way to increase circulation.

Pillow Size

In general there are three sizes of pillow – Standard, Queen and King.  One standard pillow is used for a twin bed, 2 standard pillows are used for a full bed and 2 Queen/King size pillows are used for those beds.  Sizes of pillows are generally standardized and are as follows:

  • Standard (Twin) – 20″ x 26″
  • Queen – 20″ x 30″
  • King – 20″ x 36″

Pillow Loft/ Position

Loft describes how big or thick the pillow is and how it feels when used. Loft can be hard to describe and may vary depending on the type of pillow and sleep position.  Here is some basic information about the type of pillow and loft each sleep position should choose:

  • Back Sleepers – Medium to Medium firm feel to support the neck and shoulders. Ideally, back sleepers should not have a pillow that is so high as to cause a curve in the neck that can aggravate breathing (snoring). The pillow should rest under the upper shoulders as well as the head and neck.
  • Side Sleepers – Contour pillows and higher loft pillows that support the head are recommended for side sleepers.  Typically, the large the shoulders, the higher loft for a pillow
  • Stomach sleepers – These users need a flat, soft pillow that can cushion the head but not strain the neck.

Covers and Cases

Unless the purchase is a solid foam pillow, the cover and case in which the material is contained is as important as the filling.  Look for descriptions that include the thread count of the fabric understanding that the larger the number the tighter and smoother the weave. A good standard is 200-250 thread count for polyester and cotton fabrics.

Special care should be taken when purchasing a pillow that uses the term non-woven material as this generally means a covering that might tear easily after minimum use.  Pillow cases that are put over the pillow can be rated in the same manner.  The higher the thread count the smoother and cooler the fabric will feel.

As with most purchases, the cost directly correlates to the quality of the materials. A pillow can be purchased at the local discount retailer for under $10 but it may not serve the consumer well.  At the same time, pillows can run in excess of $100 a piece for down and other natural product options.  The consumer needs to decide the level of quality that best suits their needs and pocketbook

When to Replace a Pillow

While not a pleasant thought to consider, pillows are prone to contamination in more ways than one might think. From mold spores and dust mites to old makeup and skin cells, there is a great deal that can cause pillows to have shortened life spans. While it is nice to have washable covers on pillows, it is also nice to have pillows that can be cleaned.

Not all foam pillows tolerate a quick toss in the washing machine so first read the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning.  Here are some clues that a pillow may be enjoying its last night’s rest.

  1. Sweating or skin irritation after use
  2. A pillow that will not fluff or return to its proper shape within a short period of time

A pillow that is no longer cool to the touch, one that always feels warm might be a sign or mold or dust mite contamination.

Expert Tip

Pillows may come as a one-size-fits-all commodity but in reality, they are not. Body size, head size neck length and age can all impact the way one sleeps on a pillow.  The process has become so scientific that there is actually a way to calculate which pillow is best.  Visit this link to see what science says is the perfect pillow.  http://www.sleeplikethedead.com/pillow-sleeping-positions.html

Did you know?

The first pillow seems to have appeared in about 7000 BC. The Egyptians had pillows made out of wood or stone and the Chinese had some made of porcelain.  The idea creating a pillow filled with straw seems to belong to the Greeks and Romans.
